The Twilight of Mankind: Global Warming Cannot Be Managed through the COP21  [PDF]
Jan-Erik Lane
Open Access Library Journal (OALib Journal) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/oalib.1103311
Abstract:
As the process of global warming pushes ahead, the UNFCCC keeps holding its large scale reunions, producing declarations only. Economists call these meetings transaction costs, because most of the CO2 emissions are produced by a small set of huge countries that could take speedy counter-action, if they wanted so. However, the COP21 Agreement about decarbonisation in this century is far too optimistic and does not confront the major obstacles in state coordination and international governance. One may devise utopian solutions to the global warming problematic, which is basically an energy problem, speaking of sustainable development. But realities are different, as the countries of the world cannot afford refraining from the fossil fuels. Energy innovations are available, but only on a small scale. Global warming results from the gigantic employment of energy resources, i.e. fossil fuels and wood coal. They are deemed necessary for economic and social development. The management tasks behind the COP21 project are simply too daunting, both nationally and internationally.

Abstract: lood pressure goal achievement with olmesartan medoxomil-based treatment: additional analysis of the OLMEBEST study Original Research (5804) Total Article Views Authors: Vivencio Barrios, Carlos Escobar, Alberto Calderon, et al Published Date August 2009 Volume 2009:5 Pages 723 - 729 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/VHRM.S7003 Vivencio Barrios1, Carlos Escobar1, Alberto Calderon2, Michael B hm3 1Department of Cardiology, Hospital Ramón y Cajal, Madrid, Spain; 2Primary Care Center Rosa de Luxemburgo, Madrid, Spain; 3Klinik für Innere Medizin III, Universit tsklinikum des Saarlandes, Homburg/Saar, Germany Aims: Guidelines recommend blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive patients should be <140 systolic BP (SBP) and <90 diastolic BP (DBP) mmHg. This analysis assessed goal rate achievement in hypertensive patients receiving olmesartan-based treatment in the OLMEBEST study. Methods: Patients with essential hypertension (DBP ≥ 90 mmHg and <110 mmHg) received open-label olmesartan medoxomil 20 mg/day (n = 2306). After 8 weeks, patients with DBP ≥ 90 mmHg (n = 627) were randomized to 4 weeks’ double-blind treatment with olmesartan 40 mg/day monotherapy or olmesartan 20 mg/day plus hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) 12.5 mg/day. For this analysis, the numbers and proportions of patients who achieved SBP < 140 mmHg and/or DBP < 90 mmHg at the end of the 4 weeks were calculated. Results: In patients who achieved DBP normalization (<90 mmHg) at week 8 (n = 1546) and continued open-label olmesartan 20 mg/day, 66.7% achieved SBP/DBP < 140/90 mmHg at Week 12. In patients who did not achieve DBP normalization at Week 8, 26.8% of those randomized to olmesartan 40 mg/day and 42.5% of those randomized to olmesartan 20 mg/day plus HCTZ 12.5 mg/day achieved a SBP/DBP < 140/90 mmHg at Week 12. Conclusion: Olmesartan 40 mg/day and olmesartan 20 mg/day plus HCTZ 12.5 mg/day allow substantial proportions of patients to achieve BP goals.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2022, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2022.133028
Abstract: Goal setting is a common aspect of behavior modification, however, when goal setting is most successful is unknown. The objectives of this systematic review and meta-analysis were 1) to assess τhe literature on goal setting in businesses 2) to assess Locke’s theory of goal setting and 3) to analyze the practicality of this strategy for enhancing employee motivation and performance. An attempt is made to identify limiting conditions, moderator variables, and intriguing future study topics.
Empirical Analysis on the Learning Status of Chinese College Students  [PDF]

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2019.72006
Abstract: According to the empirical analysis on the present learning status of undergraduates from the central region of China, Chinese college students learning is dominated by instrumental rationality instead of the value rationality. They pay more attention to the evaluation results of knowledge, while ignoring the understanding and application of the knowledge. They attach great importance to the external evaluation and ignore self-growth. They show inadequate initiative, enthusiasm and passion in learning but great interest in Internet funs and games. These problems require the Chinese colleges and universities make positive adjustments in faculty assessment and students’ academic evaluation, the coordination of internal and external educational resources, and the involvement of information technology in classroom teaching, so as to solve the structural inconsistency in China’s labor market.

Abstract: Asset allocation in portfolio construction must simultaneously consider market conditions and investors’ specific preferences. Therefore, it is a multi-criteria decision that goes beyond the scope of the two-criteria, mean and variance of the portfolio returns, optimization method that traditionally prevails in the financial literature. This article suggests a procedure that makes integrated asset management possible, based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process combined with a mean variance and goal programming model. We illustrate this procedure with data from Canadian mutual funds over a total period of five years and three months, from September 2002 to November 2007. The results obtained are encouraging, as the portfolios constructed in this manner perform better than the S&P/TSX 60 index, which is the reference portfolio for the Canadian market.

Journal of Service Science and Management (JSSM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jssm.2015.85074
Abstract: The effect of goal orientation on training motivation and training outcomes is measured from a sample of 216 employees. The empirical evidence confirms that state goal orientation is a three dimensional construct (performance, learning and refusal) and it predicts training motivation and training outcomes. It establishes that training programs in organizations have learning and less explored “non-learning” outcomes. And training motivation mediates the relationship between goal orientation and both outcomes. Implications of these new insights for academicians and practitioners are discussed.
The Interaction Effect of Perceived Competence and Goal Harmony on Perceived Usefulness  [PDF]
Tove B?e
Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.78118
Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the factors that influence teachers’ perceived usefulness of e-learning technology in a university context. We argue that perceived competence and goal harmony will have an interaction effect on perceived usefulness as well as being predictor variables themselves. Additionally, we include and test the established constructs of confirmation of pre- adoption expectations, and perceived ease of use as independent variables and controls in the study. The model is tested in a university setting, and the results show that perceived competence and goal harmony are positively related to perceived usefulness. The negative interaction effect between goal harmony and perceived competence on perceived usefulness is also supported, indicating the synergic effect of these two constructs on the dependent variable.

Open Journal of Depression (OJD) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojd.2017.63006
Abstract: A lack of social support for pregnant women is associated with depression after childbirth. However, few studies have examined the impact of the partners’ understanding of and support for the women’s aspirations (personal goals in life) on the severity of depression after childbirth. To examine the relationship between a partner’s attitude to his wife’s aspirations and depression after childbirth, a longitudinal study was conducted of 290 primipara women from five university hospitals between October 1997 and March 2000. Three questionnaires were administered to participant women. During their third trimester, they were asked about their aspirations (Aspiration Index) and their perception of their partners’ understanding of and support for their aspirations. At one month and three months after childbirth, they were asked about the severity of their depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale). Correlation analyses and structural equation modelling showed that the partners’ poor understanding and support predicted the severity of depression after childbirth. Perinatal health professionals should be encouraged to assess the pregnant women’s aspirations and their partners’ understanding and support regarding the women’s goals in life.
A Study on the Impact of Stress on the Selection of New Products and the Intermediary Mechanism during the Process of Goal Pursuit  [PDF]
Chuming Hu, Ying Zhao
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2018.63017
Abstract:
Most of what consumers do involves the pursuit of goals, and consumer goals affect consumer behavior [1]. Many studies show that stress always exists in the process of goal pursuit [2]. When coping with stress, consumers change their spending habits [3]. Although the existing research has explained to some extent consumer new product choice behavior, they have neglected the impact of stress on new product choice in the process of chasing goals in everyday life. Based on the research of goal orientation, stress, this study mainly explores the influence of the stress level and on the choice of new products and the moderating effect of regulatory focus, and uses two experiments for empirical research. The first experiment tested the selection of new products by manipulating the stress level. The second experiment can influence the attention point of people by manipulating the stress level, thus verifying the mediating effect of the focus. The results show that consumers are more likely to choose a new product when they are experiencing high levels of stress during the goal pursuit process than when they feel low stress. The reason is that the consumer’s focus on the product shifts to the benefits of the product’s ability to help achieve the goal in the high levels of stress. The new products are better than the old ones, so people are more willing to choose new products.
